A look back at the 2011 Halton Children’s Water Festival
Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, supported and helped make the 2011 Halton Children’s Water Festival a success. The Sixth annual Festival took place from Tuesday, September 27 - Friday, September 30 at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton.
Approximately 4,000 children in grades 2 to 5 learned about water in a fun and interactive way with nearly 60 school curriculum related activities. In the six years of the Festival, more than 20,000 students have participated.
The Festival activities focussed on the four main themes:
-
Water Science and Technology
-
Water Conservation and Protection.
-
Water Health and Safety
-
Water and Society.
Helping to stage the Festival were nearly 700 volunteers who presented activities, helped set up and tear down, delivered lunches and many other aspects of staging the festival. Included amongst the volunteer base are just fewer than 450 high school students who present the activities to the elementary school students.
The following high schools provided volunteers during the Festival:
-
Acton District
-
Christ The King (Georgetown)
-
Lester B. Pearson (Burlington)
-
Nelson (Burlington)
-
Milton District
-
Notre Dame (Burlington)
-
Oakville Trafalgar
-
Robert Bateman (Burlington)
-
White Oaks (Oakville)
Through their participation at the Halton Children’s Water Festival, high school students learn about water and develop their presentation skills. The other volunteers were staff from the partner organizations, Conservation Halton, Halton Region, City of Burlington, Town of Halton Hills and the Town of Oakville, and the community.
